Student Health, Wellbeing & College Counseling

Infirmary

School Nurse

Yukiko Miyata
ymiyata@dia.ed.jp

The infirmary is located on the 2nd Floor of DIA. The registered bilingual school nurse is on duty from 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. The nurse handles all student health related incidents at school. Under Japanese law, nurses and teacher can not administer medication at school.

When should my sick child stay home?
A sick child in the classroom that is unfit to learn risks spreading an infection to others. It is, therefore, in your child’s and their classmates’ best interest to keep them home away from school when they are not feeling well. If you have any questions about whether or not your child should stay home from school, please call your doctor or the health office.

You should not send your child to school if they have:
  • -  Symptoms related to coronavirus (follow the guidance recommended by your local health authority).
  • -  A temperature reading of above 37.5C in the past 24 hours (a child should not return to school until they have been fever-free without medication for 24 hours).
  • -  Vomiting and diarrhea in the past 24 hours.
  • -  Fever, chills, sore throat.
  • -  A rash where the cause is unknown.
  • -  Suspected conjunctivitis (pink eye).
  • -  Strep throat (must have been taking an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning to school).
  • -  Bad cold, with a very runny nose or a bad cough, especially if it has kept the child awake at night.
  • -  Influenza, a child needs to stay away from school 5 days after the start of symptoms and should be fever free for 2 days without using medication. The onset of flu symptoms (such as having high fever) is considered to be day 0, so in total students should stay away from school for 6 days.

How can I find information about medical institutions?
A medical services guidebook for foreign nationals is available here.

Information for parents: Getting vaccinated is one of the most important things you can do as a parent to ensure the long-term health of your child and others in the community.

We recommend all students get vaccinated against certain diseases for maximum protection and to remain up to date. If unsure which vaccinations your child has received, check with your family doctor or your health department to ensure that your child is up to date with the required vaccines.

Each month, DIA focuses on a Christian value during chapel. These are explored further during homeroom, culminating in presentations and performances in front of the community.
